Somerset Choral Society

Welcome to Somerset Choral Society

We are a small, friendly choral society based in Cheddar, Somerset, established in 1987. For over three decades, we have brought together singers who share a passion for classical choral music, creating a warm and supportive environment where voices can develop and musical horizons can expand.

Under the direction of our Musical Director, Peter Kingston, who joined us in February 2023, we explore a rich variety of works from the traditional choral repertoire. Our programmes span centuries of music, from the Renaissance through to contemporary compositions, offering singers the chance to perform both well-loved masterpieces and lesser-known treasures.

Our Musical Programme

We perform a diverse repertoire that includes both accompanied and unaccompanied works. From Handel and Bach to modern composers, we embrace music from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Our concerts feature traditional favourites alongside pieces that may be new discoveries for many of our singers.

Recent performances have included Handel's Messiah and other major choral works. We typically sing in four parts: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass, allowing each voice section to contribute to the rich tapestry of choral sound.

Rehearsals and Schedule

We rehearse every Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Catholic Church Community Hall in Tweentown, Cheddar, BS27 3HU. Our rehearsals are structured yet relaxed, providing singers with the guidance and support needed to tackle challenging music while enjoying the social aspects of making music together.

In addition to our regular weekly rehearsals, we organise Come and Sing events once or twice a year. These special sessions offer an opportunity for singers from the wider community to join us for a day of music-making, often working towards a performance of a major choral work.

Who Can Join

We particularly welcome singers with some choral experience who may not have sung for a while and are looking to rediscover their love of singing. No audition is required to join us—we believe that enthusiasm and commitment are just as important as experience.

We are currently actively recruiting tenors and basses. If you enjoy singing and would like to be part of a supportive musical community, we would love to hear from you. Whether you are returning to choral singing after a break or looking to develop your skills further, you will find a warm welcome at Somerset Choral Society.

Our Musical Director

Peter Kingston has been our Musical Director since February 2023. Under his leadership, the choir continues to develop its sound and expand its repertoire. Peter brings both expertise and enthusiasm to our rehearsals, helping singers of all levels to achieve their musical potential while maintaining the friendly, inclusive atmosphere that defines our society.
